Then his cousin urged him to apply to UNG. SSI also prompted Palacio to think about college, which he never considered before. "So I was able to stay ahead of classmates. "What we learned in the first three months in school, I remembered that we covered it in Summer Scholars," he said, adding that the coursework was less stressful. Rising eighth-, ninth- and 10th-grade students in Hall and Habersham counties and Gainesville City Schools learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as language arts and social studies through hands-on projects. Palacio remembers those days vividly, because "the projects were amazing, and all were my favorites." He also recalls the benefit of entering high school with the extra knowledge he gleaned from SSI. "On the last day, students present their projects in an expo." "We ask the student, 'What is something you want to know more about?'" she said. Students also conduct research projects based on their "passion," Allison said.
